Transmission Oil Leak While on Holiday in Curaçao

Greetings from sunny Curaçao.

We have family living here, and during our holiday we were able to use their car to get around. Unfortunately, the trip didn’t stay trouble-free for long.

When pulling away from a traffic light, the car started to jerk slightly. There were no warning lights on the dashboard, but we decided to pull over immediately just to be safe. After this brief stop, a large puddle of transmission oil was already visible underneath the car.

The cause turned out to be a burst hose leading to the transmission oil cooler. Transmission oil is rather essential, so continuing to drive under our own power was not an option. Roadside assistance towed us to the local Nissan dealer, where further repairs could be carried out.

Update – 20-02-2025

The car has been repaired: a new hose was installed and the transmission oil was replaced.
Total cost: €350

Nearly 5 liters of transmission oil had leaked out, while the total system capacity is 7.5 liters.

A free tip: stop immediately (if it’s safe to do so) when your car starts behaving strangely. If we had driven a few hundred meters further, the gearbox would have seized—resulting in a repair bill running into the thousands of euros.

Update – 05-10-2025

Unfortunately, seven months later, the car was written off after being hit by someone who decided to run a red light.
